The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
