Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
